The women depicted performed the duties of America's First Lady from 1845 to 1865, successively. Portraits depicted against a background with a rose motif.

The title of the First Lady is awarded to the hostess of the White House. This position is traditionally held by the wife of the incumbent US president, but several times in history this title has been given to women who are not wives of presidents (one of them is Harriet Lane Johnson, shown on a lithograph). This was the case when the president was a bachelor, widower, or when the president's spouse was unable to perform the duties of the First Lady.
