Vintage Design

Teak “boomerang” desk designed by Peter Løvig Nielsen for Hedensted mobelfabrik in c. 1963. Features of this mid-century desk include the L-shape of the desktop with raised edges on the sides and the brass joints between the legs. It has three drawers, a bar with mirrored wall and a bookshelf. Also, the top drawer has a pen tray. The condition of this vintage desk is still in very good with slight signs of use. The bottom of one of the drawers has some ink stains. The original key is present. Dimensions: h x w x d = 73 x 151 x 88 cm. Material: teak wood, teak veneer, brass and glass. About the Creator

Peter Løvig Nielsen

There is currently no verifiable biographical information available on the Danish designer Peter Løvig Nielsen.

Designing in the Scandinavian modern style that took the design world by storm in the 1950s and ‘60s, Løvig Nielsen is known for his wooden desks, tables, and storage units. Like many of his Danish contemporaries, Løvig Nielsen favored high-quality and beautifully grained woods such as teak, rosewood, and walnut, and his designs often featured tapered legs and organic curved edges. One of his most well-known designs is sometimes referred to as the Boomerang Desk (c.1956) which features an L-shaped table top on V-shaped legs with subtle brass detailing.

Although he was relatively unknown in the mid-century era, Løvig Nielsen’s designs have been rediscovered in the 21st century by vintage dealers due to the unusual ease in identifying them. Stamped “Løvig” or “Hedensted Møbelfabrik” for the Danish village in which they were produced, as well as the year of production, Løvig Nielsen’s beautifully crafted designs are experiencing a vintage revival.
