Designed by Alain Gilles for Verreum, Chubby Stool demonstrates that glass can convey real warmth and comfort. The piece's generous forms and friendly curves echo the iconic, vernacular milk stool. The combination of fabric and glass gives an unexpected look, since these two materials are rarely used together in the same product. This is the first design to apply upholstery to glass. The mirrored glass base reflects the surrounding room and amplifies the colorful fabric. The upholstered foam offers a nice place to sit while also protecting the stool in case it happens to fall over. For special orders, the stool could be upholstered in the client’s choice of fabric.
French designer Alain Gilles opened own studio in late 2007, determined to pursue his dreams and develop a personal approach to product design, furniture design, art direction, and scenography. He has since collaborated with several international editors such as Qui est Paul ?, Galerie Gosserez Paris, Magnitude, O’Sun, La Chance, Evolution, Buzzispace, Casamania and Bonaldo. Several of his products have been awarded international prizes, such as the Henry Van De Velde Label, the Design for Asia Golden Award, The “Red Dot Best of the Best” for the Welded table, and the Good Design award for the Big Table. In 2012, he was named “Designer of the Year” by the prestigious Interieur Kortrijk Fair.
Prague-based Verreum is dedicated to reviving traditional Czech glassmaking craftsmanship, especially the unique production of silvered glass. Verreum re-invented this forgotten technique from scratch, coupling tradition and technology with a new design language. Verreum specializes in smaller decorative items, like vases, bowls, lamps, candlesticks, and small furniture pieces and collaborates with both Czech and international designers, including Rony Plesl, Jií Pelcl, Olgoj Chorchoj, Arik Levy, Karim Rashid, Sebastian Herkner, and many others. For the creation of its products, Verreum relies on high-skilled craftsmen from Nový Bor, Northern Bohemia, the famous production center of Bohemian glass heritage.
