Ermanno Nason, Christ, Murano Glass and Iron, Early 1970s

Intense and passionate glass sculpture by Ermanno Nason, who uses his favorite glass, steel grey. This warm, transparent gray color is often used by solid glass sculptors, with excellent results in figures. It has almost an earthy brown tone. Livio Seguso and Lordano Rosin used this glass for their first masterpieces. Ermanno continued to use it and it became his signature. It's a great way to enhance the profile of a piece, while maintaining the transparency that glass needs. Refraction is attenuated by this glass, avoiding picking up the colors of nearby objects, while still maintaining the lens effect. Ermanno puts himself to the test with a personal interpretation of the crucifixion of Jesus. It is not suffering or glory, it is almost a peaceful sleep after a hard-fought battle. The body shows the weakness of Jesus, the legs are thin and in an almost unnatural rigid position. The face bends to the chest and the chin points to it. It is reminiscent of Michelangelo's Pietà Bandini. The body detail is exceptional. Look at the photos and request a video. The cross is made of welded and unprotected glass tubes. This is the reason for the title. The owner of the sculpture declared that it was created before the one that is now in the Murano Cathedral, for this reason I attribute it to an early part of the 70s. The glass body has a height of 80 cm / 32 inches and the same width.
