About This Piece

This drawing is a view of a garden. In the background, we see a high base topped by a statue of a 19th-century figure along with other architectural ruins. Central to the composition is a leafy tree with a leaning trunk. The beautiful flowering iris plant in the foreground gave the drawing its title. The iris has a very long history, as it was known even at the time of the ancient Egyptians and other ancient peoples. It is well documented that in Europe the iris's rhizome was used as a linen perfume.
