Gabriele Basilico
(Milan, 1944-2013)

After graduating in Architecture at the Polytechnic of Milan in 1973, Gabriele Basilico dedicates himself with continuity to photography. The shape and identity of cities and changes in the urban landscape are from the beginning of its privileged research areas.

Milan. Portraits of factories (1978-80) is the first job dedicated to the industrial periphery and corresponds to his first exhibition in a museum (1983, a contemporary art pavilion, Milan). In 1984 he was invited to be part of the Mission Photographique de la DataR, desired by the French Government, and documents the coasts of northern France. In 1991 he participated in another international photographic mission in Beirut, at the end of a war lasting over fifteen years. In Beirut he will come back three times: in 2003, in 2008 and 2011.

In 1996, with Stefano Boeri, he created an accurate survey on the changes in the landscape, the Italian landscape sections, which will be presented and awarded at the Biennial Architecture of Venice. Gabriele Basilico has produced very many city documentation works in Italy and abroad and created a large number of exhibitions and personal books. Considered an undisputed master of contemporary photography, he exposed in many countries and received numerous awards and awards. It has also intertwined its tireless interest in urban landscape transformations with seminar activities, lessons, conferences, and written reflections. His works are part of important international, public and private collections.
