Ref: Levinson 253 John Egerton Christmas Piper, better known as John Piper (Epsom, December 13, 1903 - Fawley Bottom, June 28, 1992), was a British artist. Piper was born in 1903 to Charles Alfred Piper and Mary Ellen Matthews, and was the youngest of his siblings. In 1926, the future artist interrupted his law studies to devote himself full time to art, and enrolled at the Richmond School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, were he was a pupil of the sculptor Henry Moore. Between 1928 and 1933, Piper wrote art reviews in newspapers and magazines such as The Listener and The Nation, were he reviewed artists such as William Coldstream, Ivon Hitchens, Victor Pasmore and Ceri Richards. Piper's early works were landscapes. In 1933, the year of his stay in Paris, he discovered the art of Georges Braque, Fernand Léger and Jean Hélion, and dedicated himself to the creation of works of abstract art that were influenced by constructivism, including Abstract Painting (1935). [3] Following this phase, which lasted from 1934 to 1937, Piper approached English neo-romantic realism, of which he became the main exponent together with Paul Nash and Graham Sutherland. During his career, Piper mainly created highly emotional landscapes and architectural views charged with subjective values. This interest in architecture increased further from 1938, as confirmed by his paintings, photographs, and writings on architectural criticism dating back to that period.
