About This Piece

The graphic entitled Mineralien und Gesteine (German: minerals and rocks) shows different species of minerals, rocks and decorative stones such as agate, gneiss and crystals. The artwork, made in the 19th century, comes from a German encyclopedia. Educational performances with captions. Multicolored lithography arranged in such a way that it resembles a mosaic composed of 24 stones.

The show is characterized by realism and detail, but also painterly. Beautiful colors, visible cross-section, texture and structure of rocks. These features testify to the artist's workshop and his illustrative talent.

The graphics come from the German encyclopedia Meyers Konversations-Lexikon, the first volumes of which were published in 1839. The main function of this kind of natural tables was education, so their authors tried to faithfully reproduce reality, which was most often preceded by numerous studies from nature. In the nineteenth century, they put high demands on their creators - they were to be accurate, faithful representations of reality and aesthetically valuable objects.
