About This Piece

Large artwork of a contemporary Polish artist - Wiesław Skibiński. The etching shows two large lions on a white, empty background. The animal figures refer to the lions from the Cemetery of the Defenders of Lviv called the Cemetery of the Lviv Eaglets - as indicated by the title given by the artist.

Lions are drawn with a black, expressive line. The line is at one time straight and geometric and at times vibrating, thanks to which the artist achieved the effect of expression. The outline is filled with golden paint with a slight sheen. The show is very decorative.

Apart from the undoubted artistic values of the work, the graphics also carry a symbolic message.

Lviv lions are an important Polish symbol in the Ukrainian city. They guard the entrance to the necropolis where Poles are buried during the fights for Eastern Galicia and Lviv. The aforementioned statues, which are part of the Monument of Glory, are accompanied by inscriptions - Always faithful and to you, Poland. Lions are a sign of the Polish history of Lviv and friendship with Ukraine.
